Willie studied Karate and Kali in the Philippines when he was young; he left the Philippines for Scotland in 1994 at the age of 16. He started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Elgin as part of an interest in doing an MMA fight at a very late age. After 3 months training and having one MMA match Willie found that he had a lot more interest in BJJ than MMA.
He has been a student of Matt Holland since before Focus Gold Team was formed and is now the club’s most senior students. He believes that his journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has come a long way, from being the smallest in class to being one of highest ranked student of Matt Holland. His aim is to pass the knowledge that was passed on to him to every student that comes onto the mats and to prove that BJJ is designed for the smaller, weaker person to have a fighting chance against a larger and stronger opponent. He believes that technique will always beat strength.
